What Is a Lifetime Maximum?
A lifetime maximum (or lifetime benefit limit) is the maximum total amount a health insurance plan will pay for covered services over your lifetime. Before the ACA, many plans had lifetime limits of $1โ2 million, which could be exhausted by a serious illness like cancer or a major accident.
The ACA and Lifetime Limits
The Affordable Care Act prohibits lifetime dollar limits on essential health benefits for most health insurance plans. This means your insurer cannot stop paying for covered essential services because you've used "too much" over your lifetime.
๐ก This is one of the most important ACA consumer protections. Before 2010, a single serious illness could exhaust a lifetime limit, leaving patients without coverage when they needed it most.
When Lifetime Limits Still Apply
- Grandfathered plans may still have lifetime limits on some benefits
- Short-term health plans are not ACA-compliant and may have lifetime limits
- Non-essential benefits may have lifetime limits even in ACA plans
- Dental and vision plans often have annual and lifetime limits
