Essential Health Benefits (EHBs)

Definition: The 10 categories of healthcare services that all ACA-compliant plans must cover. These include preventive care, prescription drugs, mental health services, maternity care, and more.

What Are Essential Health Benefits?

Essential Health Benefits (EHBs) are the 10 categories of healthcare services that all ACA-compliant plans must cover. Insurers cannot put annual or lifetime dollar limits on EHB coverage.

The 10 Essential Health Benefit Categories

  1. Ambulatory patient services โ€” outpatient care and doctor visits
  2. Emergency services โ€” ER visits
  3. Hospitalization โ€” inpatient care and surgery
  4. Maternity and newborn care
  5. Mental health and substance use disorder services
  6. Prescription drugs
  7. Rehabilitative and habilitative services โ€” physical therapy, speech therapy
  8. Laboratory services
  9. Preventive and wellness services
  10. Pediatric services โ€” including dental and vision for children

๐Ÿ’ก Before the ACA, many plans excluded maternity care, mental health coverage, or prescription drugs entirely. EHBs ensure all ACA plans provide comprehensive coverage.
