What Is an Effective Date?
Your health insurance effective date is the date when your coverage officially begins. Before this date, you have no coverage — any medical services received before your effective date will not be paid by your insurance.
When Does Coverage Start?
- ACA Marketplace (open enrollment): If you enroll by December 15, coverage starts January 1. If you enroll December 16–January 15, coverage starts February 1.
- Employer plans: Often the first day of the month after hire, or the first day of employment. Ask HR for your specific effective date.
- Special Enrollment Period: Coverage typically starts the first day of the month after you enroll (or the month of enrollment if you've lost coverage).
⚠️ Do not schedule non-emergency procedures assuming coverage has started. Always confirm your effective date with your insurer before receiving care.
What to Do Before Your Effective Date
- Confirm the exact date with your insurer
- Avoid non-emergency procedures until after the effective date
- Make sure prescriptions are refilled before losing previous coverage
- Get your insurance card or ID number so you can provide it to providers
