What Is Durable Medical Equipment?
Durable Medical Equipment (DME) refers to medical equipment prescribed by a doctor for home use that is durable (can withstand repeated use), serves a medical purpose, and is not useful to people who are not sick or injured.
Common Examples of DME
- Wheelchairs and mobility scooters
- CPAP and BiPAP machines (sleep apnea)
- Blood glucose monitors (diabetes)
- Hospital beds for home use
- Walkers and crutches
- Infusion pumps
- Oxygen equipment
- Nebulizers
How DME Is Covered
ACA plans must cover DME as part of essential health benefits, but the specifics vary:
- Prior authorization is often required before obtaining DME
- Your insurer typically has preferred DME suppliers โ using them costs less
- Coinsurance (often 20%) typically applies after the deductible
- Some items may be rented rather than purchased (your insurer makes this determination)
โ ๏ธ Always get prior authorization before obtaining DME. Without it, your insurer can deny coverage entirely.
